Tamil Nadu has launched the “Singapen Athiradi Padai” (Lioness Special Task Force) as a major initiative to strengthen the safety and protection of women and children. The scheme was one of Chief Minister Vijay’s key election promises, and after assuming office, he signed the file for its immediate implementation, making women’s safety a top priority of the government.
Following the government’s decision, Home Secretary Manivasan issued the official Government Order based on recommendations from DGP Sandeep Rai Rathore. Senior police officer Bhavaneeswari was appointed as the first Inspector General (IG) of the Singapen Athiradi Padai. During its initial phase, the force was established at the DGP office with a dedicated team consisting of an IG, SP, DSPs, Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, and more than 20 administrative and police personnel.
The task force has been created with a clear focus on women’s safety. Its responsibilities include identifying crime-prone areas, conducting regular patrols, and maintaining a visible presence at bus stands, railway stations, educational institutions, IT parks, and other public places to prevent crimes. The force will also respond quickly to complaints, rescue affected women, ensure their safety and welfare, and connect them with the necessary support services without delay.
In addition to law enforcement, the Singapen Athiradi Padai will work closely with the Social Welfare Department, Education Department, and NGOs to create awareness and improve the overall safety environment for women. Although the launch event faced two earlier postponements, the force has now been officially inaugurated at Chennai’s Rajarathinam Stadium by Chief Minister Vijay. Following the launch, dedicated Singapen Athiradi Padai teams are set to begin operations across all districts of Tamil Nadu.
