The Tamil Nadu Police department has introduced Internal Vigilance Cells across 46 units as part of an initiative aimed at strengthening accountability within the force. The mechanism is intended to provide the public with channels to report allegations involving bribery, corruption, misuse of authority and other forms of misconduct by police personnel.
According to the information released by the department, the new cells will function under directions issued by the Director General of Police (DGP). Complaints received through the designated communication channels are expected to be examined and followed up through appropriate departmental or legal procedures, depending on the nature of the allegation.
The network covers nine city commissionerates and 37 districts. The commissionerates included in the arrangement are Chennai, Tambaram, Avadi, Salem, Tiruppur, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. The district-level coverage extends across regions including northern, central, western and southern Tamil Nadu.
The initiative also provides dedicated mobile and WhatsApp contact facilities for reporting complaints. The department has indicated that confidentiality will be maintained for complainants, with the stated objective of making it easier for members of the public to raise concerns without fear of retaliation.
Internal monitoring mechanisms such as these are intended to address complaints relating to police conduct through a process separate from ordinary public grievance reporting. Where allegations involve possible criminal offences, departmental action and legal proceedings may be considered according to the applicable rules and evidence available during an inquiry.
