A major cannabis smuggling operation was uncovered near Sankagiri in Salem district after police intercepted a group allegedly involved in transporting narcotic substances. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, officers conducted a search operation that led to the arrest of six young men suspected of being connected to the illegal trade.
During the operation, police reportedly seized around 12.5 kilograms of cannabis along with three two-wheelers believed to have been used for transportation. The seizure is considered significant, as authorities continue their efforts to curb the movement of narcotics across the region.
The case has attracted attention on social media after reports claimed that one of the accused, identified as Boopathi Raja, held a position in a political organization. The development sparked widespread discussion online, with several users raising questions about possible political links. However, officials have so far focused on the criminal investigation and the evidence collected during the operation.
Following their arrest, all six accused were produced before the judicial magistrate court. Based on the court’s order, they were remanded to judicial custody and lodged in Salem Central Prison. Police officials have indicated that further investigations are underway to determine whether the group was part of a larger network involved in drug trafficking activities.
