Puri Jagannath Temple vs ISKCON: Dispute Over Rath Yatra Timing

Puri Jagannath Temple

Table of Contents

Puri Jagannath Temple is a 12th-century Hindu temple built by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. The temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Lord Vishnu/Krishna). This temple is a part of the Char Dham pilgrimage (Badrinath, Dwarka, Rameswaram, Puri). This temple is managed by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA). They also conduct the annual Rath Yatra during which Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are taken to the Gundicha Temple in grand chariots.

Why in the news?

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has objected to ISKCON’s practice of conducting Snan Yatra and Rath Yatra on dates other than the prescribed traditional dates across India and abroad.

What is ISKCON?

This was founded in New York by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. It is headquartered in Mayapur, West Bengal, India. They have 650+ temples, cultural centers, and communities worldwide. The philosophy of ISKCON includes the Gaudiya Vaishnavism tradition (Bhakti movement started by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the 16th century). ISKCON’s core practices include chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, devotional worship of Lord Krishna, studying the Bhagavad Gita, and Srimad Bhagavatam.

Key Issue

SJTA’s Scholars concluded that ISKCON’s view of conducting yatras on random dates is “baseless and contrary to tradition. SJTA also said, according to Odia tradition, devotees observe the Rath Yatra on the 2nd day of the Ashadha Shukla Paksha every year, marking Lord Jagannath’s journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple.

Actions taken by SJTA

The SJTA submitted a 100-page report countering ISKCON’s stand. In 2025, ISKCON reportedly held Rath Yatras at 40 locations in India and abroad, which SJTA says is hurting the sentiments of devotees worldwide.

Significance for the exam

Thus, the dispute clearly highlights the conflict between traditions and the globalization of Religious practices. This also raises questions on authority, authenticity, and standardization of rituals in Hinduism.
