UIDAI has set specific lifetime limits for changes to name, date of birth and gender, while other Aadhaar details can be updated subject to applicable Aadhaar Card Update Rules and charges.

Aadhaar cardholders cannot change every personal detail an unlimited number of times. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has prescribed specific limits for updating certain demographic information, particularly name, date of birth and gender.

Under the current Aadhaar Card Update Rules, an Aadhaar holder can update their name twice during their lifetime. Date of birth and gender can generally be updated only once each. Any request beyond these limits is subject to UIDAI’s exception process and requires appropriate supporting documents and justification.

Other Aadhaar details have different provisions. Address, mobile number and email address can be updated when required, subject to the applicable service procedure and charges. Biometric information, including photograph, fingerprints and iris scans, can also be updated through Aadhaar enrolment centres, with no lifetime numerical limit specified for such updates.

If a person has exhausted the permissible limit for a name, date-of-birth or gender update, the standard process may not be sufficient. UIDAI provides an exception-handling mechanism in eligible cases. For example, a further name update can require documents such as a Gazette notification and other supporting proof, followed by the prescribed exception process involving UIDAI.

The charges for Aadhaar services have also changed under the latest fee structure. UIDAI’s current service information lists ₹75 for a demographic update when done separately and ₹125 for a biometric update in applicable cases. Address updates through the Aadhaar app are also currently listed at ₹75.

Aadhaar holders should also distinguish between document update and renewal of the Aadhaar number itself. UIDAI says residents are suggested to update their Aadhaar documents at least once every 10 years. This is not the same as a mandatory renewal of the Aadhaar number after 10 years. UIDAI currently states that document submission through the myAadhaar portal is free until June 14, 2027, while submission at an Aadhaar centre costs ₹75.

Therefore, Aadhaar holders should check the applicable UIDAI rules before requesting an update, particularly for name, date of birth and gender. Since these fields have lifetime limits, submitting incorrect information can make future corrections more difficult and may require an exception process.
