Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth to Lead the Indian Army: A New Chapter in Military Leadership

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth

The Government of India has announced the appointment of Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of Army Staff (COAS), marking the beginning of an important new chapter for the Indian Army. He will assume the position after the retirement of General Upendra Dwivedi, who has served as the Army Chief since June 2024. The appointment has drawn significant attention across defence circles because Lt Gen Seth brings with him nearly four decades of military experience spanning command, operations, planning, and modernization. His rise to the highest position in the Army reflects a career built on consistent performance and strategic leadership. At a time when India faces evolving security challenges and rapidly changing warfare technologies, the selection of a leader with extensive operational and modernization expertise is being viewed as a significant step toward strengthening the country’s military preparedness. Defence analysts believe his experience across multiple formations and his understanding of future warfare requirements make him well-suited to guide the Army through a period of transformation. For many serving officers and veterans, his appointment represents continuity in professional military leadership while also signaling a stronger focus on technology-driven combat capabilities.

One of the most notable aspects of Lt Gen Seth’s appointment is the historic significance it carries for the Armoured Corps. He becomes the first officer from the Armoured Corps to be appointed Chief of Army Staff since General Shankar Roy Chowdhary retired in 1997. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986 and has since built an impressive military career. Over the years, he has commanded some of the Indian Army’s most important formations and operational commands. His leadership responsibilities included serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of both the Southern Army Command headquartered in Pune and the South Western Command based in Jaipur. These commands play a crucial role in India’s defence strategy, particularly in regions facing Pakistan. He also commanded the renowned 21 Corps, popularly known as the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the Army’s key strike formations designed for offensive operations. In addition, he served as General Officer Commanding of the Delhi Area and led the Republic Day Parade in 2023, a role that reflects both operational credibility and ceremonial prestige. These diverse assignments have given him valuable exposure to strategic planning, field operations, force management, and national-level military coordination.

Beyond his battlefield and command credentials, Lt Gen Seth has earned recognition for his contribution to the modernization of the Indian Army. As warfare increasingly shifts toward technology-intensive operations, military leaders are expected not only to command troops but also to envision and build the future force. Lt Gen Seth has played a significant role in this transformation through his work in strategic planning and capability development. During his tenure in key planning directorates, he was closely associated with long-term military modernization initiatives, capability enhancement projects, and defence acquisition programs. His efforts have contributed to shaping the Army’s future operational framework. One of the most talked-about examples of his forward-looking approach came during his time as commander of the Southern Army Command, where his leadership supported the integration of drones into armoured formations through the innovative Shaurya Squadron concept. This initiative demonstrated how traditional armoured units could effectively incorporate unmanned systems to improve reconnaissance, surveillance, and battlefield awareness. Such efforts reflect a broader vision of preparing the Indian Army for future conflicts where artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, cyber capabilities, and real-time intelligence will play increasingly important roles. His experience in balancing traditional military strengths with emerging technologies is expected to influence the Army’s modernization agenda in the coming years.

Lt Gen Seth’s appointment also carries a unique personal and historical dimension because military service runs deeply within his family. He is the son of Lt Gen Krishna Mohan Seth, a distinguished officer who served as the Adjutant General before later becoming the Governor of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tripura. In a remarkable coincidence that highlights the family’s military legacy, both father and son have commanded the prestigious Sudarshan Chakra Corps during their careers. The tradition of service extends further through his younger brother, Rear Admiral Ravnish Seth, who continues to serve in the Indian Navy and is currently posted in Karwar. This rare combination of leadership across different branches of the armed forces underscores a family commitment to national service spanning generations. As Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth prepares to take charge as the next Chief of Army Staff, expectations are naturally high. He inherits an Army that is modernizing rapidly, adapting to new security realities, and strengthening its operational readiness across multiple fronts. His blend of operational excellence, strategic vision, technological awareness, and deep military heritage places him in a strong position to guide the force through future challenges. For soldiers, defence professionals, and citizens alike, his appointment represents confidence in experienced leadership and optimism about the Indian Army’s ability to remain capable, modern, and prepared for the demands of the future.
