The Indian Space Research Organisation has reached a significant milestone by successfully validating its homegrown ship-based tracking technology. This terminal, developed entirely within India, represents a major leap in the country’s ability to monitor objects in regions where land-based communication is unavailable. The successful trial confirms the functionality of a system designed to maintain constant contact with various maritime and aerial assets.
Conducted in the waters near Chennai, the testing phase utilized the vessel Sagar Manjusha, which belongs to the National Institute of Ocean Technology. The evaluation period commenced on July 26 and concluded with the verification of all operational parameters. This new system, known as a Ship-Borne Terminal, allows for the tracking of satellites, spacecraft, and even submarines while they operate far from traditional terrestrial control centers.
Traditionally, Indian space and maritime missions relied heavily on international technology and imported hardware for mid-sea tracking operations. The development of this indigenous alternative aims to reduce dependence on foreign equipment and enhance national security through self-reliant communication infrastructures. By creating a local solution, India joins a select group of nations capable of maintaining autonomous long-range tracking capabilities across the ocean.


The project was a collaborative effort between ISTRAC, a specialized branch of the national space agency, and researchers from the Chennai-based National Institute of Ocean Technology. Official reports indicate that the terminal is engineered to function reliably under extreme environmental conditions, including heavy rainfall and turbulent seas. This resilience ensures that telemetry data can be transmitted accurately to ground stations regardless of weather patterns.
This technological advancement is set to play a critical role in the upcoming Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send Indian astronauts into orbit. The terminal will provide the precise tracking necessary to monitor the spacecraft’s path as it traverses maritime boundaries. Additionally, the system will support the communication needs of the armed forces and enhance the monitoring of missile trajectories during future tests.
The achievement underscores India’s growing expertise in developing complex, dual-use technology that serves both scientific and strategic interests. By successfully implementing a domestic solution for deep-sea and space communication, the nation has strengthened its position in the global aerospace arena.
