The wait is over for the people of Tamil Nadu. After a high-octane election that dismantled decades of two-party dominance, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay is officially set to take the oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 2026.
The ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, May 10th, at 10:00 AM at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has formally invited Vijay to form the government, marking the first time a debutant party has ascended to power so swiftly in the state’s modern history.
The Road to 120: How the TVK Coalition Was Formed
While Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, it was initially shy of the 118-seat majority mark. However, through strategic negotiations, Vijay has secured a comfortable majority of 120 MLAs.
The coalition includes:
- TVK: 107 seats (excluding the seat Vijay vacated after winning two).
- Indian National Congress: 5 seats.
- VCK & IUML: Provided the critical numbers to cross the threshold.
- Left Parties (CPI & CPI(M)): Backing the bloc to ensure a stable secular government.
The “Natural Progression”: The Rahul Gandhi Factor
A standout feature of this new government is its alliance with the Congress. Political analysts point to the personal rapport between Vijay and Rahul Gandhi, which dates back to their first meeting in 2009. Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is expected to be a guest of honor at the swearing-in, underscoring the national significance of Vijay’s victory.
Expected 2026 Tamil Nadu Cabinet
While the final list is subject to the official gazette, sources indicate an eight-member cabinet will take the oath alongside the new CM.

A Constructive Opposition: The DMK & AIADMK Response
Outgoing CM M.K. Stalin has gracefully acknowledged the mandate, stating that the DMK will serve as a “constructive Opposition.” This transition marks a peaceful transfer of power, as both the DMK and AIADMK recognize the TVK’s role in avoiding a constitutional crisis and potential President’s Rule.
What’s Next?
The Governor has given the new administration until May 13th to prove its majority on the floor of the Assembly. With 120 MLAs already pledged, the floor test is expected to be a formality, clearing the way for the “Thalapathy” era of governance to begin in earnest.
