The political landscape of Tamil Nadu has shifted gears into high drama. Following a 24-hour whirlwind of shifting alliances and “resort politics,” Thalapathy Vijay, the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has officially staked his claim to form the next government.
On Saturday evening, Vijay met with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Raj Bhavan, presenting a final list of supporters that effectively ends the state’s brief period of political uncertainty.
Cracking the Magic Number: How TVK Hit 120
In the 234-seat Tamil Nadu Assembly, the majority mark sits at 118. While TVK secured 108 seats (effectively 107 as Vijay won two constituencies), the path to power required strategic alliances.
Thalapathy Vijay’s bid was solidified when he crossed the threshold with 120 MLAs-elect, thanks to external support from:
- Congress: 5 MLAs
- CPI & CPI(M): 4 MLAs (combined)
- VCK & IUML: Extended unconditional support to avoid the imposition of President’s Rule.
Note: Leaders from the VCK and IUML clarified that while they are backing Vijay to ensure state stability, they maintain their long-standing ties with the Secular Progressive Alliance.
Friday’s Turbulence: The AMMK Forgery Controversy
The road to the Chief Minister’s office wasn’t without roadblocks. On Friday night, a major controversy erupted involving the AMMK and its lone MLA, S. Kamaraj.
TVK leaders initially claimed to have a signed letter of support from Kamaraj. However, AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran struck back, filing a police complaint alleging the document was a forgery and reaffirming his loyalty to the AIADMK. This setback, combined with a “false start” journey to Raj Bhavan on Saturday morning, kept the state on edge until the Governor finally granted Vijay an official audience.
Opposition Response and Legal Battles
As the numbers stabilized, the political temperature began to cool among the traditional giants:
- EPS (AIADMK): Edappadi K. Palaniswami issued a formal congratulatory message, signaling an end to attempts at an alternative coalition.
- M.K. Stalin (DMK): The outgoing CM pledged that the DMK would act as a “constructive Opposition,” noting that the decision of his allies to support TVK was a necessary move to prevent a constitutional vacuum.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has been pulled into the fray. Two petitions were filed challenging the Governor’s initial hesitation to invite the leader of the single largest party. The apex court is expected to reinforce the precedent that a majority must be proven on the floor of the Assembly, not behind the closed doors of the Raj Bhavan.
A New Era for Tamil Nadu
With the “Thalapathy” era of Tamil Nadu politics officially beginning, the state looks toward a transition of power that many thought would take years, not a single election cycle. By 6:20 PM on Saturday, the gates of Raj Bhavan finally opened for the TVK leader, marking the final stretch of this historic government formation.
