A rare, decades-old black-and-white photograph of CM Vijay Family with six-year-old Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar attending his parents’ second wedding ceremony has gone viral online. The old photograph has attracted public attention and brought back memories of Vijay’s early family life during an important period in Tamil Nadu.
The photograph shows the young Vijay standing with his parents during their church wedding ceremony around 1980. The image has become a talking point as people look back at the early years of the actor-turned-politician.
At present, the Vijay family continues to remain in the public spotlight for both political and personal reasons. Vijay’s political party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has been working to build its presence in Tamil Nadu politics. At the same time, reports about legal proceedings concerning Vijay’s personal life have also attracted attention.
The story of Vijay’s family began as an interfaith love story. S.A. Chandrasekhar, who was then an aspiring director, rented a room in the house of playback singer Shobha. While working as an assistant director on the film Pattakatthi Bhairavan, Chandrasekhar spoke to veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan about his relationship with Shobha.
With Sivaji Ganesan’s blessing, Chandrasekhar and Shobha got married in 1973. Ganesan’s wife, Kamala Ammal, personally tied the traditional thali around Shobha’s neck during the wedding.
Their son, Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, was born a year later, on June 22, 1974. He grew up in a family closely connected with music and cinema, which later helped shape his journey into acting.
The Vijay family also faced a painful loss when their young daughter died at the age of two. The tragedy deeply affected Vijay, and he became quiet and withdrawn following the loss.
The church ceremony seen in the viral photograph took place around 1980, when Vijay was about six years old. Although Chandrasekhar and Shobha were already married, Shobha wanted to have another wedding ceremony in a church to respect her husband’s Christian faith.
The second wedding ceremony brought together the different religious backgrounds of Vijay’s parents. Their young son Vijay was present at the ceremony, making the photograph a rare glimpse into his childhood and family life.
Many years later, Vijay also married someone from a different religious background. He married Sangeetha Sornalingam, a Hindu woman from a Sri Lankan Tamil business family based in London.
