In a landmark step for India\u2019s cooperative sector and green energy transition, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah inaugurated India\u2019s first cooperative multi-feed Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant<\/strong> at Kopargaon in Maharashtra. This initiative marks a historic milestone in India\u2019s cooperative sugar sector<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event in early October 2025 saw the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis<\/strong>, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde<\/strong> and Ajit Pawar<\/strong>, and Union Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Model for Sustainable Sugar Production<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located at the Sahakar Maharshi Shankarrao Kolhe Cooperative Sugar Factory<\/strong>, the facility integrates energy, fertilizer, and agricultural waste utilization under a cooperative framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What is Compressed Biogas (CBG)?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    CBG is a renewable fuel<\/strong> produced from biomass and organic waste\u2014like sugarcane press mud, cattle dung, agricultural residue, and sewage\u2014through anaerobic decomposition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It shares similar properties with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)<\/strong> and can replace CNG in automotive, industrial, and commercial sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The government plans to replicate this model<\/strong> in 15 other cooperative sugar mills, supported financially by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC)<\/strong>. Amit Shah urged sugar mills to diversify into ethanol production and fruit processing, emphasizing integrated value addition for higher farmer profitability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This initiative aligns with India\u2019s SATAT Scheme<\/strong>, targeting CBG production from 62 million metric tonnes of waste, which helps reduce oil imports and increase natural gas share from 6% to 15% by 2030. It also supports India\u2019s net zero emissions target by 2070<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Empowering the Rural Economy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The cooperative model ensures farmers and local stakeholders benefit directly<\/strong>, boosting rural incomes through biomass supply. The Sanjeevani Group, managing the Kopargaon mill, has implemented initiatives like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Linking 100 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Supporting fisheries for 1,000 farmers<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Launching Sanjeevani University<\/strong> for 20,000 rural students<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Establishing India\u2019s first rural call center<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
